Mel Gibson Alerted 'The Resurrection of the Christ,' 'Braveheart' Writer to Spiritual Opposition

Randall Wallace, an Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director, and producer, recently mentioned how actor and director Mel Gibson told him that Satan would attack him if he signed on to work on the upcoming film, “The Resurrection of the Christ” the long-awaited sequel to the 2004 film, “Passion of the Christ.”

During an interview with Fox News journalist Raymond Arroyo on the podcast, “Arroyo Grande” Wallace, who known for his work on “Braveheart,” “We Were Soldiers,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Secretariat,” and “Heaven Is for Real,” shared what Gibson told him about “The Resurrection of the Christ,” during the promotion of the film, "Hacksaw Ridge.”

“We were having dinner while we were promoting ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ and I said, ‘Look, you know the story that you really need to tell is the resurrection,’” Wallace said he told Gibson.

Gibson then said something, following an extended pause, that Wallace described as “profoundly beautiful," according to ChurchLeaders.

“If we do this, it can’t be for the money, and it can’t be to get back at people that have hated us or wronged us or been unhappy with us,” Gibson said before ultimately telling Wallace, “You know, Satan’s going to come after you.”

Wallace jokingly replied, “Satan doesn’t really care about Baptists.”

Per Church Leaders, Wallace described how Gibson’s interpretation of the spiritual world is “really special”

“His unique vision of the spiritual realm is really special,” Wallace said. “The movie in some ways will have elements that people have never seen before, in fact in many ways it’ll be stuff nobody’s ever seen, and yet I believe it’ll be in a certain way the most orthodox telling.”

“It’ll be the most consistent telling of the overall belief, the awe and the mystery, that Christians experience when they experience the resurrection,” said Wallace.

“The Resurrection of the Christ” will be released as a two-part sequel, with part one hitting theaters in 2027, which will then be followed by part two in 2028.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment plan to release a newly remastered version of “The Passion of the Christ” in theaters later this year, on Sept. 10.
