Recently, I spent some time chatting on the phone with a sweet friend. As we talked, she began to share how completely overwhelmed she felt trying to juggle all of life’s demands. But as she opened up, she dug deeper than just a busy schedule. She shared some of her inner struggles—the heavy, quiet things she’d been wrestling with alone.

Listening to her reminded me of how incredibly common it is for us to carry burdens that weigh down our spirits without even realizing it. We walk through our days doing the laundry, making the meals, writing the chapters, and managing the schedules, all while carrying an invisible, exhausting weight.

Guilt and shame are emotions that so many of us grapple with on a daily basis. They love to linger in the quiet corners of our lives, casting long, obscure shadows over our joy, our relationships, and our time with the Lord. But ignoring them isn’t the solution. Those heavy emotions are actually signals—God-given billboards, even—alerting us that something deeper needs addressing within our hearts.

When we feel that nagging ache of guilt, it’s often an invitation from a loving Father to come clean, lay it down, and experience true restoration and freedom. In my book Heart Happy, I talk a lot about how a healthy spirit requires an honest connection with God.

If your heart is feeling heavy today, here are ten practical, life-giving steps to integrate the beautiful practice of confession into your daily routine.

10 Steps to Unload Your Burdens and Heal Your Heart

  • 1. Recognize the Signals: Understand that emotions like guilt and shame are indicators, not final verdicts. They don’t mean you are a failure; they simply point toward areas that require tender attention and spiritual healing where we’ve fallen short of God’s standard.
  • 2. Approach with Humility: We don’t have to clean ourselves up before we talk to God. Psalm 51:17 teaches us, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” Come to Him just as you are, ready to unload your heavy pack and accept His sweeping mercy.
  • 3. Confess with Sincerity: Genuine confession is critical for emotional and spiritual freedom. Openly acknowledge your missteps before God. Don’t treat it like a rigid, formal checklist, but rather as an earnest, heartfelt admission of your faults and a sincere plea for His comfort.
  • 4. Accept Forgiveness: Understanding and truly accepting God’s forgiveness is where the healing sticks. When you confess, you must choose to believe in His immutable promise to forgive and cleanse you from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). If He says you are clean, stop trying to pick up the dirt again.
  • 5. Seek the Root: Have you ever had a tiny, microscopic splinter or a piece of glass dug into your foot? It’s so small you can barely see it, yet every single step causes sharp discomfort. Sometimes the smallest, hidden splinters of sin cause the most nagging spiritual pain. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you seek the root cause of your guilt so you can pull it out through confession.
  • 6. Let Go of Limping: Even long after a physical injury has completely healed, old habits can make us limp out of pure muscle memory. The same is true for our spirits. Recognize old, negative thought patterns that no longer serve your walk with Christ, and consciously choose to step forward into the smooth, steady stride that forgiveness provides.
  • 7. Embrace Complete Transformation: We all make mistakes, but that isn’t where our story ends. Romans 3:23–24 reminds us that while all have sinned, we are “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Fully accept that you are fundamentally transformed by Christ’s sacrifice—you are genuinely forgiven and made righteous.
  • 8. Reject False Narratives: The enemy loves to whisper the lie that some sins are simply too big, too ugly, or too repetitive for God to forgive. Challenge and change that narrative immediately! Believing your mess is bigger than His mercy completely contradicts the absolute completeness of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
  • 9. Celebrate Your New Identity: Don’t walk away from confession feeling somber; walk away celebrating! Let the pure joy of being entirely accepted, deeply seen, and unconditionally loved by the Creator of the universe fill and renew your heart.
  • 10. Live in God’s Love: Finally, make intentional room for God’s love to dwell deep within you. Post-confession, your heart isn’t just a cold, empty, swept-out space—it is a newly sanctified, warm home meant for divine love to reside, flourish, and overflow into the lives of those around you.

Journal Prompt & Action

Take a quiet moment today to pause and allow God to search your heart, just as David asked in Psalm 139:23: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”

If you don’t already journal, I highly recommend it. There is something about writing everything down on paper that helps clear my mind. So here is a journal prompt to get you started today:

Is there anything you’ve been holding onto that you need to confess? Quietly pray, lay it at the feet of Jesus, and let go of those heavy burdens.

Afterward, grab a 3×5 notecard and write out Isaiah 1:18 to place on your bathroom mirror or kitchen windowsill where you’ll see it daily:

“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

Embracing the daily habit of confession clears the cluttered pathways of our souls, making room for God’s love to pour in. It fills your heart with a profound, unshakeable peace that whispers, “Jesus loves me, this I know.” Let that beautiful truth echo in your soul today as you walk out your faith journey, fully transformed, deeply renewed, and beautifully heart happy in your newfound freedom.

A Prayer for a Redeemed Heart

Lord, I lift up the reader whose spirit feels tired and weighed down by the invisible chains of guilt or shame today. Thank You that we don’t have to hide our brokenness from You. Give us the courage to bring our hidden splinters into Your light. Wash us clean, fill the empty spaces of our hearts with Your overwhelming love, and teach us to walk without a limp. Thank You for the gift of the cross and the beautiful freedom of a fresh start. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
