In december 1943 I found myself in a concentration camp for 9 months. I was terrifyingly thin, and my body was covered in sores. On christmas eve, the camp commander sent for me. When I arrived, i found him seated at a table before a sumptuous dinner. He made me watch during his whole meal and continuously tormented me for being a christian and because I preached the gospel to my companions in chains. At the end, coffee and cakes were brought out. "Your wife is an excellent baker" remarked the commander as he ate a cake. As I didn't understand, he explained: Each month your wife has sent a package of cake which I have enjoyed

As if drawn by a magnet, he approached the table, took the violin from its case and examined it with a connoisseur's eye. He lifted up the bow. Complete silence fell in the room. Several people who recognized him murmured amongst themselves, « It’s Paganini! »
