How to Become Famous

I imagine most people, at some point in their life, dream about being famous. Even if just for a moment. Most likely what most of us picture is the glamorous side of celebrity, like riding around in a limo, getting our picture taken wherever we go, and cashing a big, fat paycheck every week. But I’m sure that fame has its downsides and disadvantages. For example, you have no privacy. Stories about you, even ones that are likely untrue, will likely be published every week. You have to be “on” every time you go out in public and you better be dressed fashionably, especially if you are a woman, or you’ll end up on someone’s worst dressed list. Despite all of that, some people might still want to give it a try.

So, how do people become famous? I had the privilege of sitting with two men recently who have become tops in the nation in their fields. They are known everywhere and have achieved a lot of fame because of the giftedness they have in their area of expertise. I don’t want to give any more information so as to protect their names and families, but one question I asked them was, “How did you become famous in your line of work?”

They both said it wasn’t something they were looking for, nor did they set out to acquire it. They claim their strategy was to be simple, live a day-to-day life, and try to make a difference in the world through their abilities. By accomplishing those three goals, these men became overwhelmingly famous. Instead of using antics to capture the media’s attention, trying to be someone else’s hero, or drawing all the attention to themselves, they just stuck to the basics of life.

With that in mind, we all have the chance to become famous by just being the best we can at whatever we are attempting to do. Instead of trying to be like someone else, just be the best parent or the best husband you can be. Be the best brother, uncle, nephew, grandparent, co-worker, or volunteer. It will surprise you how quickly your fame rises among your peers because of the level of excellence with which you accomplish all your tasks. People will start talking about you and will want to be around you. They’ll introduce you to their friends and pretty soon you will be famous in your own right. Your example may lead others to achieve greatness in their lives.

Think about how good your life could get if you applied yourself wholeheartedly in every situation with every person you meet. Consider the impact your efforts would have with family, friends, and neighbors. It’s possible your hard work, perseverance, and desire to be the best will help you acquire genuine notoriety. Now you might not be riding around in a limousine, getting the best table at the local restaurant, or having paparazzi snap your picture, but you will get a much greater reward. You will have peace and contentment in your life and an attitude that will make you famous among your family and friends and keep you winning at home.
